From here to Phoenix

Chris and Shawn invited us down to Phoenix New Years weekend so we could be there when they blessed their 3 children, including brand new baby Emma. At first I was hesitant... a 6 hour drive drive with 3 small children ( I know, Shawn does it all the time... but STILL!)? It turned out (with the help of a borrowed DVD player and snacks and toys and books) our kids are not so bad... they weathered it relatively well, and lived to tell about it :) We had a great time staying at their house, the kids played great together and left us to sit and talk as, I'm told, adults do sometimes. We spent Saturday morning at a park near their house which includes a duck/fishing pond. We hadn't brought any bread to feed the ducks so Jesse ran to the nearest store which didn't have any bread, but did have tortillas... ducks can eat tortillas too right? Notice how Leila is separated from the group? It's a natural phenomenon I'm still trying to figure out... she cares nothing for what other kids may be doing, she marches to the beat of her own drum and observes others with a sort of wonderment. I like think she gets that from me, but I think my seperation from other kids was forced rather than by choice. I think they just didn't get my jokes. Cooper would throw the pieces of tortilla with all the force his little body could produce, only to have the tortilla float down to the water a few inches in front of him. Then he'd try again with the same result. I just think tortillas are not very aerodynamic. Jesse didn't bother ripping out little pieces, he threw one whole tortilla out to the middle of the pond like a frisby.Marshall got scared of the geese that honked at him and started crying (remember, he's a tender little guy) but after I made a honking noise with my mouth and used my hand as a goose to tickle his belly, he saw it as a game and started giggling when they honked at him. Soon he was content just to watch them float by.Leila started eating the tortillas. She'd take a big bite out of one and then hold the bitten peice out to the geese and say "here!" They swam away. Poor Leila. I think she fancies herself as one of the princesses in the movies she watches, who are always swathed in multitudes of birds and animals and she can't understand why earthly ones don't want to fawn all over her. It's ok Leila, every human you meet fawns all over you... don't you worry! The blessings on Sunday were beautiful and their ward was very nice. The dinner Shawn made afterward was wonderful! Oh! I didn't even mention... Shawn sprained her wrist and had it wrapped in a brace the whole time we were there, and a newborn baby, AND she took complete care of us the whole time! Thank you Shawn... we had a wonderful time, and can't wait to come back!
Things to remmeber from the trip:

-Cooper snuck 3 packages of fruitsnacks in addition to the 1 I had already given him and had a tummy ache a few hours later. I showed him the wrappers and said "See? When you eat this many it gives you a tummy ache!" he looked at me with his large innocent eyes and said "I'll just ask Jesus and He'll make it better." I was immediately humbled and all the spite was wiped from my heart. "Ok," I said "lets ask Jesus to make it better."

-We were watching a movie where a man and wife were sitting in bed talking before they went to sleep. I said "See Jesse? Normal people sit and talk before they go to sleep. See how the man isn't passed out and the woman doesn't sit alone and read by herself?" Chris piped in and said "You do that too?! Ha ha!". My dad said: "Wendy likes to go to sleep at night, so we just talk in the morning."
Then Cooper looks over at me perplexed: "Momma, I don't have anyone in my room to talk to."
"It's OK," I said "In a little while Marshall will be big enough to sleep in your room and you can talk to him."
"Oh, OK mom."
(Man! Am I glad I had Marshall so soon after I was prompted to. What would I have said then? "Sorry Coop, I knew I was supposed to have a brother for you, but I really don't like having babies sooo.... you'll just have to be alone for a while...." eeech!)

-We were crossing over Hoover Dam and Cooper looks up at the huge bridge they are constructing and says with obvious fear showing in his voice: "uh... I don't want to go on that one, please lets not go on that bridge!"

This happened before Phoenix but I need to write it down anyway:

-Leila was helping me make chocolate dipped strawberries. I dipped one in the chocolate and offered it to her to eat. She closed her mouth and refused, shaking her head. "Leila it's yummy" I said. "See?" I took a bite.
"No!" she said "Apple!"
"It's not an apple Leila, it's a strawberry. Here." I offered her another one, and again she closed her mouth and shook her head.
"No! 'now white!" She said " 'now white!" (snow white) A light bulb clicked in my brain.
"Leila, these aren't poisoned apples! They're strawberries!"
Ha ha ha, I laughed about that for a long time. She thought we were dipping apples in poison like the witch in Snow White! That little girl is too cute! I finally got her to try a strawberry by first letting her taste the chocolate and then offering her a little bit on a strawberry. I couldn't get here away from them after that.

Also, when Leila blesses the food she says it "dood", makes me laugh every time!

FUn, I love taking family trips. But long traveling time is tough! Sounds like it was worth it though!
