Chimaltenango

Jesse's back from Guatemala, and oh how I wish I could have gone with him! There are way too many experiences to share all of them here, and I'm debating on whether or not to share the funny ones along with the sad ones as I don't want to downplay the severity of the children's situations. Lets just say that there is laughter and humor amid all suffering... especially in children.

Guillermo (pronounced gee-YAIR-mo) and Mandy Brooks are the ones spearheading this effort. Guillermo is native to Guatemala and grew up as an orphan there. He served a mission for the LDS church and came home from it determined to make life better for other orphans in his country. He was working at an American run orphanage with Mandy, (from cedar city, SUU) who was there on her own accord for 4 months, and they both were saddened by the neglect and poor treatment of the children there. After Mandy went back to the states, Guillermo started getting suspicious of the children being adopted out for tens of thousands of dollars, but the conditions at the orphanage were remaining the same... like the orphanage had no hope of seeing any of the money. Jesse heard horrific stories of children being sold as sex-slaves on the black market, and also being adopted only to be killed for their organs to also be sold on the black market. I had heard similar stories of things like that happening in Mexico and other places... but I thought they were urban myths... I guess I just hoped they flat out weren't true. Guillermo started poking around and trying to find out information about where the children and the money were going. On one of his days off he got a call from the cook who worked for the orphanage telling him that the children were being taken to be hidden away so Guillermo could not report the owners to the officials. I'm not clear on the details after this point, but I do know:
-Guillermo eventually gained custody of some of the children that were taken
-He now has his own orphanage with 6 children,
-He comes to the states to do fund-raising to support his orphanage

Mandy is helping raise funds and find help, that is how she found Jesse and Kevin. They decided they not only wanted to donate money, but they wanted to go to the orphanage and make whatever improvements they could and help get the orphanage set up to be able to take in babies.
While Jesse was down there they built 24 closet/shelf things to put clothes in, put cabinets in the kitchen, painted on the outside and inside of the orphanage, and played with and loved the children. The youngest there is 15 months (about, they're not sure of her age) and the oldest is 18(? I think, I'll have to double check with Jesse).

The saddest part about this whole thing is that the Guatemalan government made adoptions illegal. Their theory is that since their babies were being so mistreated and even murdered when adopted out, they might as well die starving on the streets of their own country. Most of the children at the orphanage still have parents, but either were abandoned by them, or taken away from them becuase of abuse and neglect. Nearly all of the children are born of prostitute mothers and drug addicted fathers. Despite this, Guillermo still tries to find their families and get them rehabilitated enough to take their children back. Since the children were basically abandoned, he is free to set the conditions the parents must meet to be reunited with their children. He uses gospel principles and requires that the parents attend church for a set period of time, he also requires a series of visits with the children for 2 hours every 2 weeks, if the parents have shown improvement.
One girl, Jennifer, sat in her room and cried while the other kids were visiting their drug-ridden parents, because she had no one to visit her, drug-addicted... or abusive... she didn't care, she just wanted SOMEONE to care about HER.
This is my brother Chris (who served his mission in Guatemala) with Myerlee... Jesse said the kids just loved him so much.

The things I miss

Since Jesse's been gone I've noticed all the things he does good/bad... I just miss all of them:
-Opens doors for me
-Carries the kids for me
-Takes out the garbage
-Does the dishes
-Opens jars
-Warms up the bed
-Loves my babies
-Lets me whine
-Asks me how I'm feeling... helps me relieve stress
-Drives us places while I do my makeup in the car
-Helps me get the kids bathed and ready for church
-Leaves his shoes all over the house
-Eats all the leftovers so they don't go to waste
-Accumulates dirty laundry faster than anyone I know
-kisses me while I'm cooking
-Is really really excited for any food I make
-Drinks 3 gallons of milk by himself in 1 week
-Wrestles with Cooper
-Gets me a cold drink of water at bedtime
-loses his phone, wallet, keys etc. (every day)
-does a funny dance when we're getting ready for bed
-makes me laugh everyday

Imagine me trying to do all this by myself! I can't very well make myself laugh.... well maybe I can... but not as good as Jesse can. Since he's been gone I have a fridge full of leftovers, no laundry to do, a little boy who wants to wrestle me all the time, and a cold bed. I'm ready for Jesse to come back!

New phone

After Cooper and my pink phone had an encounter in the bath tub it started acting like it was possessed and beeping at wierd times and stuff. I had my eye on a new one but couldn't bring myself to buy a new expensive phone if I didn't need one. Well after the bathtub incident I needed a new one. I had been looking into getting a Palm Centro: After using it for a few weeks I love it! I can check my e-mail, get directions, coordinate my calendar, and even play sudoku (best of all... no more big bulky planner! and it even sync's up with my computer so I can type all the info in on my computer... and it will transfer to my palm! Isn't technology awesome?!!). Remind me to thank Cooper for dunking my pink phone in the tub... what a guy :)

Absent

I have a new respect for single mothers as I try and hold the fort down by myself until Jesse gets back from his week of service in Guatamala. He went to help get an orphanage set up to house infants as well as older children. He and my brother Chris and Jesse's dad, Kevin are down there donating time and money to help this orphanage. He is doing wonderful things down there and I am so proud of him. I just miss him...

I'm surrounded by cute people!

Exhibit A:

And then there's Jesse:

(grabbed a shirt out of the "folded" laundry pile and put it on too quickly to notice it was already on a hanger!)
Cool new hike by gunlock called "camelback". Definately "fun for the kids".

Dia de la Madre (for those of you who don't "habla espanol" it's Mothers day)

Here's how the conversation went:
Me: Hey Babe, I think we should invite my mom and your mom over for mother's day so that they don't have to cook... I think it would be nice.
Jesse: (thinks for a minute) Okay but I'll do the cooking... I don't want you to have to cook for everybody.
Me: oh wow, that'd be really nice... are you sure? (thinking to myself: aaaaaaaaaahh... he's going to try to COOK?!!! In MY KITCHEN?!!!)
Jesse: Yeah, I'll get my dad and your dad to help me... it'll be fun, maybe we'll barbeque.
Me: We don't have a barbeque.
Jesse: oh, we'll figure something out.
Me being awesome: Hey, maybe you could order bowtie chicken cesar salad from pasta factory, and then just have garlic bread or something with it.
Jesse: Yeah, but I want to cook something... you know? I want to do something for you guys.
Me: (thinking to myself: Yes but, um... just don't... maybe you could...shoot. How do I get out of this?) okay babe... that'd be great.

I solved this delemma by waiting until Saturday to say anything about the dinner and then asking him if he'd planned what he wanted to cook... he looked thoughtful for a minute and then said... "me and my dad will go to the store and just pick stuff out" (yeah, great way to plan a dinner.... NOT!)
Me: I'll just call pasta factory and order that pasta for you... you can just pick it up.
Jesse: (face lighting up) Hey! Good idea!
Good idea indeed. We decided to use our delicate china for the first time, we set the table with white linen and cloth napkins... the boys sort of had their own outcast table with folded chairs and paper plates. I suppose we can make up for that on Father's day. However, I think a treat for them would be the paper plates and folded chairs!
This conversation does not, however, display the effort and love Jesse put into this dinner. He invited both his grandma's and his 2 sisters, and also our neighbors Kelsi and Ryan. He was serving a total of 8 woman! He called all of their spouses and asked them to come in their suits to serve us... which they did and they all looked fabulous. He even asked them all to prepare something to say about their wives and motherhood. They did that part before we ate and there was not a dry eye in the room... they all did a fantastic job! I was about to reign in my dad though when he was supposed to be talking about MY mom, and he started in on what a good mom HIS mom was (that'll make a lady feel special).... but he brought it back around... good job dad.
Great job Jesse... you guys were so sweet. Thank you :)

Mother

Happy day to all you Moms and future Moms. This post is to broadcast to all the world the greatness of my own Mother.

My mom is the 3rd of 8 children, I guess she liked it because she had 8 herself. She married my dad at 19 and had her first baby, a boy, 9 months later. And another, and another. Then came the girl, Annie. I came 3 years after that... the 5th.
My mom said it took 5 tries to have a perfect kid... poor mom... all those practice rounds!
I don't know anyone who works harder, is more thoughtful, patient, and saintlike. I also don't know anyone who can laugh as hard, beat my pants off at scrabble EVERY TIME, have curlier hair (except maybe tu-pac, but he's dead), or easily feed 24 people in one sitting (yup, that's right, 24!). My mom is smart enough to know when you're lying, but wise enough to wait until you fess up on your own. She listens even when she wants to laugh, or cry. She can put a fussy baby to sleep in 2 minutes tops, get a stubborn toddler to eat or "go potty", and she's changed roughly 60,000 diapers in her life... and still counting. She's even known for grabbing the ears of her grown sons to get their attention when they are sassy. This woman bravely would take 6+ children camping in rain or snow... sickness or no. She's had to drive the junkiest cars known to man in order to budget enough to feed her 8 loves. She's denied herself countless pleasures, untold dreams, and many nights of sleep. For what? For 8 little hoodies who still call her "mim". Her face engraved on a special place in 8 little hearts. All for different reasons... for me, it's:
-teaching me how to calm sick children
-how to relate to anyone
-dealing with crisis by just focusing on what you need to do.
-how to deal with a difficult husband :)
-how to budget and plan meals
-encouraging me to go for my academic goals.
-listening to me whine, giving me sympathy, and then telling me to get over it.
She's what makes it possible for me to look at motherhood and say "I know you, you don't scare me! I can do what it takes to master you, because I know someone who did it already!"
Thanks mom I love you
"Everything that I am, or ever hope to be, I owe to my darling mother."
-Abraham Lincoln

hm...

She might be getting a little too big for the bassinet...

Check this kid out! He's totally got it made and he knows it! He's thinking:
"my mom got me balloons and cake and invited all my friends... all I have to do is sit back and enjoy!"

Just kidding, Cooper's not like that at all, he's such a good kid. I even had fun on his birthday. I did everything I could the day before so on his birthday I could just chill and play with him. We snuggled in bed in our PJ's in the morning.... he got to have lucky charms for breakfast (his choice, of course). He got to open one of his presents early and we played with it all morning, a track for his matchbox cars.. with a jump and everything! Anyway... I thought all of the attention would make him cranky for his party, but he was actually such a good kid all day! Don't, however, make the mistake of thinking that the terrible 2's have not started for this guy... because he has his days, believer you me!

Candice helped with Leila... or should I say " held her the entire party so that I could be the party mom... thanks Candy!"

If Kelsi hadn't have handed out the goody bags... I would have totally forgot! Thanks Kels!
Happy Birthday my boy! Mom loves you!
